Historical background
Conceived by famed gun designer John M. Browning during World War I, the Browning Automatic Rifle first entered service in 1918 as a .30-06 caliber automatic rifle intended to give infantry squads a portable source of sustained fire. Over the interwar years the design evolved into the improved M1918A2 configuration in the late 1930s, which standardized features preferred by U.S. troops. The BAR family became a mainstay of U.S. ground forces — used extensively in World War II, heavily in the Korean War, and retained in limited roles into the Vietnam era — prized for its combination of firepower, durability, and relatively light weight for its class.
