Historical Background

The Russian PPSh-41 (“Pistolet-Pulemyot Shpagina”) was a Soviet submachine gun designed by Georgy Shpagin as a simplified, cost-effective, and reliable replacement for the earlier PPD-40. Nicknamed the “burp gun” for its rapid rate of fire, the PPSh-41 became one of the most iconic weapons of World War II.

Utilizing a simple blowback, open-bolt action, the PPSh-41 was constructed largely from stamped steel to speed up wartime production. It could be fed by either a 35-round box magazine or a 71-round drum and fired the 7.62×25mm Tokarev pistol cartridge — giving Soviet infantry devastating firepower in close combat.

The PPSh-41 saw extensive service throughout World War II and later in the Korean War. With over six million units produced during the war, it became one of the most prolific submachine guns in history and a defining symbol of Soviet frontline firepower.
