Historical Background
The M14 rifle, officially designated the United States Rifle, 7.62mm, M14, is a selective-fire battle rifle chambered for the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge (commercially known as the .308 Winchester). Adopted in 1958, it replaced the M1 Garand as the U.S. military’s standard-issue service rifle—entering Army service by 1961 and Marine Corps service by 1965. The M14 served as the primary infantry rifle for U.S. forces in the early years of the Vietnam War and across allied units in Europe and South Korea until it was gradually succeeded by the M16 by 1966–67.
In the cosplay and film world, the M14’s distinctive look has been featured by numerous characters and military re-creations—one popular example being Lady Punisher, known for wielding the rifle as part of her signature costume.
