Historical Background
The Carlisle Model First Aid Packet was developed at the Carlisle Barracks Military Reservation in Pennsylvania during the early 1920s. The packet took its familiar name from Carlisle Barracks, where the U.S. Army established the Medical Department Equipment Laboratory on October 1, 1920.
First Aid Packets had already seen extensive service with American forces before and during World War I. Issued as the “First Aid Packet – U.S. Army,” millions of the small metal containers were manufactured for American soldiers. Bauer & Black of Chicago was among the principal manufacturers. Each packet contained a sterile wound dressing and was normally carried in a web first aid pouch attached to the soldier’s pistol or cartridge belt.
Following World War I and into World War II, the First Aid Packet—commonly abbreviated FAP by collectors—continued to evolve through several designs and manufacturing variations.
According to FM 21-11, First Aid for Soldiers, the standard packet included:
- (1) Wound dressing
- (1) Sulfanilamide, 5 grams, in a sterile double-wrapped shaker-top envelope
The Distinctive Orange-Red First Aid Packet
During World War II, Sulfanilamide was incorporated into the individual First Aid Packet to provide soldiers with an antibacterial powder that could be applied to wounds before additional medical treatment was available.
To help distinguish packets containing Sulfanilamide from earlier supplies, certain early-war packets were refinished in a distinctive bright orange-red color. These packets stand out dramatically from the more familiar olive-drab examples and have become particularly recognizable among collectors of early WWII U.S. medical equipment.
