Historical Background

The 20-millimeter round refers to a family of cannon ammunition around a 20 mm caliber. Because of its size and kinetic power, 20 mm is typically used in autocannons and aircraft or vehicle-mounted guns to engage materiel targets — aircraft, lightly armored vehicles, radar sites, and fortified positions — rather than individual infantry. While certainly lethal to people, 20 mm projectiles are optimized for defeating equipment and structures where the combination of velocity, explosive effect, and incendiary potential is most effective.

The three most common 20 mm types are:

  • AP (Armor-Piercing): designed to penetrate armor with a hardened core.

  • HE (High-Explosive): contains an explosive filler that detonates on impact to maximize blast and fragmentation.

  • HEI (High-Explosive Incendiary): combines explosive and incendiary effects to both detonate and ignite combustible materials.

These distinctions made 20 mm ammunition a versatile choice for both air-to-air and air-to-ground roles throughout 20th-century conflicts and in many modern autocannon systems.
