Some History

During the late 1920s, the US Army began examining mortars to act as a light infantry support weapon. The War Department eventually settled on a 60mm design from Edgar Brandt, a French ordnance engineer, and purchased a license to build the weapon. The model was standardized as the Mortar, 60mm M2. Testing took place in the late 1930s, and the first order for 1,500 M2 mortars was placed in January 1940.

The M2 Mortar was used throughout World War II by the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps. It saw service again in the Korean War.  During the Vietnam War, the M2 was again used by the U.S. Army and Marines, as well as by South Vietnamese forces. Ultimately, the M2 was replaced by the M224 in 1978.

Throughout the Mortar, 60mm, M2 service life, many types of ammunition shells were developed and used.  The most common was the M49A2 HE (High Explosive) shell and used the M52 Point-detonating fuse.  It was used against infantry and other light area targets.

Product Description

**ITEMS ARE PLASTIC AND ARE FOR DISPLAYS.  THEY ARE NOT TO BE USED OR PLACED IN ACTUAL MORTAR TUBES!

M.A.'s Replica Dummy M49A2 Mortar 60mm shell has 3 sections that screw together;  Main Body, Tail-Fin and Fuse.  They are all made out of solid plastic resin molded from real inert M49A2 shell parts.  The main body is colored OD (Olive Drab, like originals) and has the correct shell data stencil.  The Tail-fin assembly is made of flexible black plastic and painted OD.  It is flexible so it will not break easily.  60mm mortar shells primarily used the type M52 (aluminum) or M52B2 (bakelite with aluminum cap) type fuses, so, M.A. offers both types in colored resin. We even offer a stainless steel safety wire too!  A must have for any display of Mortar shells.

In addition, M.A. offers "aged" mortar rounds that have that "weathered" look compared to a crisp, clean new shell, along being able to buy the Fuses and Saftey wire separate.  These are great for any reenactor, cosplay, or historical display where the real thing is too expensive, illegal or too valuable to use.  This is an affordable reenactment gear item.

**NOT INTENDED TO BE USED OR PLACED IN ACTUAL MORTAR TUBE AND CANNOT BE MADE TO FUNCTION AS ANY KIND OF EXPLOSIVE.
