U.S. M2 60mm - M49A2 HE Mortar with Aluminum Fuse - Replica Dummy
Product Description
**ITEMS ARE PLASTIC AND ARE FOR DISPLAYS. THEY ARE NOT TO BE USED OR PLACED IN ACTUAL MORTAR TUBES!
M.A.’s replica dummy 60mm M2 M49A2 high-explosive mortar round is an accurate, high-quality reproduction of the original 60mm mortar shell. Constructed from solid plastic resin molded from original inert M49A3 components, the round assembles in three screw-together sections: the main body, tail-fin assembly, M52 Aluminum fuse. The main body is finished in authentic Olive Drab and can be supplied with the correct stencil data if desired.
The tail-fin assembly is resin and painted OD, featuring the correct black band near the top and a properly recessed primer detail, faithfully replicating the originals. Because 60mm rounds typically used M52 (aluminum) or M52B2 (Bakelite with aluminum cap) fuses, we offer both replica fuse styles in colored resin. Each comes with a stainless steel safety wire.
Choose from new (crisp) or aged (weathered) finishes and with or without data markings to best fit your display or restoration needs. This replica is an essential piece for museums, vehicle restorations, film and theatrical prop departments, reenactors, and collectors who want authentic appearance without the hazards or legalities of original ordnance.

Historical Background
In the late 1920s, the U.S. Army began exploring the use of mortars as a light, portable infantry support weapon. After evaluating several designs, the War Department selected a 60mm model developed by French ordnance engineer Edgar Brandt and purchased a license to produce it domestically. The weapon was standardized as the 60mm Mortar, M2, with testing conducted in the late 1930s. The first production order for 1,500 units was placed in January 1940.
The M2 Mortar became a vital support weapon for U.S. infantry during World War II, serving with both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps. It continued in service through the Korean War and later saw extensive use during the Vietnam War, not only with American forces but also with the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN). The M2 remained in use until it was officially replaced by the M224 60mm mortar in 1978.
Over its long service life, numerous types of ammunition were developed for the M2, including high explosive (HE), smoke, and illumination rounds. The most common among these was the M49A2 HE and its later variant, the M49A3 “Quick” round, both utilizing the M52 point-detonating fuse. These shells were designed for use against enemy infantry, fortifications, and other light area targets, proving highly effective across multiple conflicts.
