Historical background
The British STEN submachine gun was developed during World War II as a simple, inexpensive, and rapidly produced weapon to arm Allied forces. Introduced in 1941, the STEN fired the 9×19mm Parabellum cartridge and was built from a minimal number of metal stampings and parts — making it quick to manufacture in large quantities. Over four million were produced in several variants (Mk I through Mk V). Despite its crude appearance, the STEN proved effective in combat and became a common weapon among British troops, Commonwealth forces, and European resistance fighters. Today, it remains an iconic symbol of wartime ingenuity and resourcefulness.
