Historical background

Introduced in the early 1940s as a wartime expedient, the M3 .45 ACP caliber submachine gun was designed to be a simple, low-cost alternative to the heavier Thompson. Its stamped-and-spot-welded sheet-metal construction and straightforward blowback action made it quick to produce and rugged in the field. The weapon’s compact, utilitarian profile—resembling a mechanic’s grease gun—earned it the enduring nickname “Grease Gun.”

Because it was inexpensive and easy to manufacture, the M3 was widely issued to support troops, vehicle crews, and rear-area units who needed a compact automatic weapon. It saw extensive service during World War II, continued use through the Korean War, and remained in limited service and surplus circulation with U.S. and allied forces for years afterward. Its practicality and low cost made it a common sight in military and paramilitary inventories worldwide during the mid-20th century.
