Historical background
The MP 40 (Maschinenpistole 40) was a German 9×19mm submachine gun introduced before and used extensively during World War II. Evolving from the earlier MP 38—developed by Erma Werke (with Berthold Geipel involved in its design)—the MP 40 refined the stamped-steel, economical construction of its predecessor and became a ubiquitous short-range weapon for German forces and some Axis units. Production of all MP 38/40 variants reached roughly 1.1 million examples by the end of the war.
Today, non-functional replica MP40 magazines are popular not only with reenactors and museums but also in the cosplay community, where they serve as convincing, safe accessories—for example, as props paired with Stormtrooper and Sandtrooper costumes—providing authentic visual detail without the risks or legal issues of original hardware.
