Historical background
The STG44 – Sturmgewehr 44 (“Assault Rifle 44”) was a German selective-fire rifle developed during World War II. Also known as the MP43 and MP44 (Maschinenpistole 43/44), it was the first successful and widely produced rifle to use a shorter intermediate cartridge. By all accounts, the STG44 performed effectively, particularly on the Eastern Front, but arrived too late to alter the outcome of the war. Its true legacy lies in its influence on modern small-arms design—giving rise to an entirely new class of weapons that would carry the name “assault rifle.”
